Keith Day
Ubiquisys involves in femtocell business from day one. Where does the confidence of femtocell come from?
Ubiquisys recognised a market trend early; that demand for mobile data would rise inexorably and that it was mostly consumed indoors where macro performance is compromised. We also predicted that the cost per MB of mobile data needed to be dramatically reduced to deliver sustainable growth in data services.
We also saw femtocells as more than just a miniature cell. The real potential in femtocells is not their small size but their intelligence. Ubiquisys powers the only femtocells to constantly sense their environment and make intelligent, autonomous decisions on configuration, on media sharing and application actions.
We know femtocell can provide a new class of value-added service and Ubiquisys is the leading power to develop femtozone API. Can you share the latest progress of femtozone API?
Femtocells act as a bridge between networks: mobile, home, office, and internet. They securely and invisibly authenticate users as they move between cells. Ubiquisys has harnessed these capabilities to enable third-party application developers to femto-enable their applications. Many mobile applications have been unsuccessful because of the need to manually report location or enter a user name and password, or because of security fears. An example of a femto-enabled application is UX-Zone from Intrinsic, which automatically changes a smartphone’s display and available applications depending on whether you are at home, in the office, or on the move.
The industry was very shocked by the below $100 femtocell announced by Ubiquisys. How does Ubiquisys achieve the low price femtocell CPE?
The development of the first sub-$100 femtocell was made possible through Ubiquisys’ unique Femto-Engine business model. The Femto-Engine model is made up of two main components. First is operator-proven software which makes the femtocell an intelligent cell - ready for real-world deployments. Second is a combination of hardware blueprints, operational systems and manufacturing support that gives high volume device manufacturers a fast track to production.
Device manufacturers always had the ability to cost-optimise femtocell hardware, but have been prevented by the barrier of having to develop the massive software system that provides the radio intelligence and operator experience. Ubiquisys has liberated innovative companies like SerComm to produce the world’s first cost-optimised residential femtocells.
Does Ubiquisys have plan to develop femtocell other than WCDMA femtocell?
Ubiquisys is currently focused on WCDMA, as this is the current largest market opportunity globally, but we do also have an advanced LTE development program. Ubiquisys has already incorporated most of the Self-Organising-Networks capabilities (a cornerstone of LTE) into its WCDMA femtocells, creating self-organising femto-nets for enterprise, so a move into LTE was natural for Ubiquisys.
Current operator mainly choose femtocell to solve coverage problem. What does Ubiquisys think of this? When can full potential of femtocell be realized?
The previously high wholesale price of femtocells has restricted the range of consumer offers that operators could make, and people with poor coverage are most likely to agree to pay for a femtocell. The Ubiquisys-powered sub-$100 femtocell has changed all that. In May SoftBank in Japan offered a free (Ubiquisys) femtocell to all of its customers. This is not about coverage – it is about differentiating SoftBank based on a premium mobile experience indoors, including a range of innovative services. Free will realize the femtocell’s true potential.
What does Ubiquisys think of the future of femtocell in China?
With 3G networks being relatively new in China the potential for femtocells is huge. Whereas femtocells in western markets have been deployed long after 3G networks themselves, in China the opportunity exists to rollout femtocells alongside the traditional macro network and ensure quality of service is excellent from the outset. It is therefore possible that take-up of femtocells will be much quicker in China compared to other regions.
